WYG celebrates awards for five year Birmingham BSF programme - 20/12/2012

Press Release

International multi-disciplinary consultancy WYG, is shortly to complete the final handover marking the end of a five year programme of work on the Government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative with Birmingham City Council, Birmingham LEP and Lend Lease.

With more than ten years’ experience in the education sector, WYG was appointed as Independent Certifiers to the Birmingham Local Education Partnership (LEP) in 2009. The appointment has seen the group oversee the construction and commissioning of 15 out of 21 BSF refurbishment and new-build primary and secondary schools and academies with a total capital value of £330 million in addition to the provision of a range of asbestos, environmental and management services.

Handover of the remaining six schemes is due to take place next year but the programme has already won a number of major awards:

  • The UK’s first “Outstanding” Ofsted award in 2012 for Park View School, Birmingham
  • Three trophies from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for built-in quality, construction, and a temporary ’decant’ facility at Broadway School, Birmingham
  • Business in the Community ’Big Tick for Education’ accreditations in 2010 and 2011
  • The West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence award for the quality and efficiency of its people and leadership skills in 2011 and 2012

Steve Fowler, Associate Director, WYG said: “The construction advisory sector has always been a demanding one, especially recently. We are proud to have been able to play a part in transforming education in Birmingham. Schemes like this have put WYG firmly on the map”.

The BSF programme has built upon previous landmark commissions like the £545 million new Queen Elizabeth Hospital II, Birmingham; the Grade II listed Bull Ring Rotunda, and the iconic Fort Dunlop development on the site of the original Dunlop factory in Birmingham which once employed 10,000 people, on which WYG provided grant and funding expertise.
